After touring North India for a couple of days, I must admit that North India is more beautiful than we expected (and this is when I regret the clash I had with my friends initially, remember?).

So, last time, we had so many options in North India to choose from as we departed Himachal Pradesh after exploring Bir, and this demanded us to ask you through a poll.

Since most of you chose Uttarakhand as the next destination, we were soon in Uttarakhand, waiting to explore the unexplored beauty of one of the hill stations, Ranikhet.

Why Ranikhet?

Can you imagine a place where you can unfold and get immersed in nature? No crowds but only yourself and nature. All the mountains we talked about before had one thing in common - rolling hills dressed in green.

But there is something unique about this particular hill station. Although the surroundings of this mountain are green, the distant peaks appear to wear a white cap. This peak beyond the tall pine trees around you creates a moment, "Ah! I wish I could go there."

And that is what I was talking about. Imagine a place which is greenery for as long as you can walk. The closer you get to the white cap mountain, the more green your surroundings become. Soon, you realize you couldn't ask more than where you are.

Ranikhet, which translates to "Queen's Meadow," gives you a quiet escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. A gentle breeze carrying the scent of pine trees welcomes you into the town as you set foot.

Basic Information

History

The history of this beautiful hill station started with the colonial era in India. Established by the British government in 1869, Ranikhet served as a military base to monitor the activities on the Indo-Tibetan border. 

Once started as a military camp area, Ranikhet grew to unforeseen heights, and you could still see the traces of its history through its well-preserved colonial architecture. This jaw-dropping site, which we know today, played a crucial role during World War II as a centre for the Kumaon Regiment.

Geography

Situated in the Almora district of Uttarakhand, Ranikhet is at an altitude of 1,869 meters (6,132 feet) above sea level. Lush green spaces surround the entire space with capture-worthy panoramic views of the snow-capped Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Nandaghunti. 

The whole area, as long as you can see, is covered under the rolling hills with pine and oak forests, creating the exact atmosphere with the cool climate you have been dreaming of experiencing.

The local culture of Ranikhet is just speechless. This hill station boasts a rich culture deeply rooted in the traditions of the Kumaoni people. The locals here are known for their warm hospitality and simple way of life. 

Attending popular local festivals like Bikhauti, Harela, and Ghee Sankranti will show you the true essence of Uttarakhand. Above all, the traditional dance of this small town - the Kumaoni dance with local music, will leave you wondering what just happened in front of you.

Language Used

One of the best factors of visiting north India is the language diversity. One such diverse place is Ranikhet, where people are comfortable with widely spoken languages such as Hindi and English. Yet, the national language, Hindi, acts as the primary language. 

However, the local people native to the Kumaon region speak Kumaoni widely. This diversity of people speaking multiple languages makes this not-much-explored hill station an ideal spot for anyone.

Ranikhet receives a mild climate, making it a year-round destination for travellers. The summers (March to June) are warm and pleasant, with temperatures ranging from 8°C to 22°C (46°F to 72°F). 

While summers are ideal for nature walks and exploration, winters (October to February) show chilly temperatures, with rare snowfall changing Ranikhet into a winter wonderland. The temperature during winter ranges from 0°C to 15°C (32°F to 59°F).

• Jhula Devi Temple

Start your exploration of Ranikhet with a visit to the Jhula Devi Temple. The Goddess Durga resides in this ancient temple and is known for its unique style of seeking blessings - tying bells. The musical sound of these countless bells creates a spiritual and feel-good atmosphere.

• Chaubatia Gardens

Chaubatia Gardens could be your point if you are a nature lover. Enjoy helping the local farmers harvest apples, peaches, apricots, and plums while you enjoy the breathtaking views of the Himalayas half covered in white caps. Well, this may also become your picnic point. 

• Mall Road

Save this spot until the end of your trip to bring home unique souvenirs while treating yourself to some of the local foods and the historic views of buildings. Shop for local handicrafts and woollens in the pleasant weather and the picturesque surroundings.

While this hilly area is all you could ask for when you set foot in, a few places nearby can take your adventurous trip a step further. Such places include:

• Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary

Located at 56.8 km, the Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary is home to various flora and fauna, including Himalayan langurs, leopards, and deer. Also, you can trek the trekking trails that provide panoramic views of the Himalayan peaks. It's an ideal spot for nature and wildlife enthusiasts. 

• Kausani

At 58.6 km away, Indians also call Kausani the Switzerland of India. Being a hill station, Kausani is widely known for providing tourists with attractive views of the Nanda Devi and Trishul peaks. Then, visit the Anasakti Ashram, where the landscapes of Kausani inspired Mahatma Gandhi.

One thing you can carry home from the places you have neither visited nor will be visiting soon is to carry a few things along with you. Such things you can take back home from Ranikhet are:

Ranikhet is famous for its high-quality woollens. From shawls to blankets, the local artisans showcase their skill in creating warm-designed woollen products. Taking home fine-wollen products would be good, isn't it?

Ranikhet is a hilly area with fully cultivatable lands with healthy fruits. Hence, getting natural honey or jams here isn't challenging. Just taste a spoonful of these items and enjoy the natural flavour.

Handicrafts are a few regular things you see in the markets. Hand-carved wooden items, intricately designed copperware, and handmade baskets are some you could buy home to show the rich culture of Ranikhet.

The nearest airport is Pantnagar Airport, approximately 115 kilometres away. Flights from major cities connect to Pantnagar. You can hire a taxi or use public transportation to reach Ranikhet.

The nearest railway station is Kathgodam, well-connected to major cities like Delhi. From Kathgodam, a scenic drive through private or public transportation or shared taxis takes you to Ranikhet.

• By Road

Ranikhet is accessible by road, and several state-run and private buses drive from nearby cities. Self-driving or hiring a taxi can give you the flexibility to enjoy picturesque landscapes through the way. 

The fares of your journey to your destination vary from travel agency to agency and the distance you travel, while the public transportation fares start at ₹200 from any side. Yet, we recommend you carry some extra cash to deal with unexpected situations.
