🤴 A Travel Itinerary for a Historical City

explore 2,500 years old place in 4 days

Hey explorer,

You remember, a few days back, I wrote about the cultural insights of Madurai and how one of my friends told me about his secret way to get peace living in the city itself?

After a few days of our conversation, I set foot in Madurai for the first time with many expectations. Unfortunately, it was a disaster. The reason is that I had no perfect itinerary and spent the whole time travelling.

So, as for you, I do not want you to commit the same mistake and here's the itinerary you can follow.

Hey Hey!

How about we learn something each time we discover a new place or break down the history of a place you might have heard once at least?

Kudos if you answered "Arunachal Pradesh" to the last question. Let's see if you can get this also right.

Overview

Madurai has a rich and ancient history dating back over 2,500 years. It served as the capital of the powerful Pandya dynasty, who ruled South India from the 6th century BCE to the 13th century CE. The Cholas, Nayaks, and the British Raj ruled this city and left their mark on culture.

This historic city sits on the banks of the Vaigai River in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. Three hills - Yanaimalai (Elephant Hill), Nagamalai (Snake Hill), and Pasumalai (Cow Hill) - form a scenic backdrop to the city. The lands around Madurai are a mix of fertile plains and rocky outcrops.

Madurai is the cultural heart of Tamil Nadu. The city lives in a deep-rooted connection to tradition. Temple rituals, festivals, and a strong emphasis on family and community values define the local way of life, while music, dance, and storytelling are integral to Madurai's cultural scene.

As the city's culture amazes you, so does the local language. The native people who speak Tamil as their primary language, which is also the state language, will get more importance from the natives. While English is in tourist areas, learning a few basic Tamil phrases will do much better.
