🏝 A 4-Day Travel Itinerary for Divar Islands

let's see if this is all you need

Hey explorer,

You remember how we spoke about visiting the hidden gems of Goa the last time? Amongst all the places we discussed, I was so much into the Divar islands and wanted to explore them very badly.

So, soon after our conversation, I booked my tickets to Goa and took my whole time to enjoy these hidden parts of one of the smallest states of India. The question is, how can you make the most out of Divar Islands?

No perfect answer? Let's dive in.

Why Divar Islands?

Imagine yourself craving a break from the usual tourist path. You're tired of crowded beaches and busy streets. You yearn for a place where time slows down while calmness washes over you. How would you feel if I said that the place is all yours - roam, shout, run without bumping into others, and more?

That's where Divar Island whispers its magic. Divar Island is Goa's hidden gem, nestled on the Mandovi River. It's like stepping into a time capsule. Lush green paddy fields open like a blanket, and charming Portuguese houses whisper tales of a bygone era. Unlike the bustling beaches of Goa, peace rules the area here.

Hey Hey!

How about we learn something each time we discover a new place or break down the history of a place you might have heard once at least?

Kudos if you answered "Calangute Beach" to the last question. Let's see if you can get this also right.

Overview

Divar Island creates an atmosphere that remains in you forever - lush paddy fields like emerald carpets on the land, while Portuguese-style houses add a touch of European influence. The island is a place for nature lovers, offering a calm escape from the crowds.

With the rich past, the remains, like Saptakoteshwar, tell that the island once was a pilgrimage site, but later in the 16th century, the religious landscape transformed here during Christianization, leading to both religions living harmoniously as a part of Goan culture.

With a blend of Hinduism and Catholic traditions, the local Goan people of the Divar Islands celebrate festivals like Ganesh Chaturthi and Bonderam grandly with traditional music, dances, and several culinary dishes. I promise that festivals here are a feast for your eyes.

Speaking of which, Konkani is the official language of Goa, and people on the Divar islands use it as their primary language, although you can hear English and Hindi here and there. Check out these daily phrases to avoid misunderstandings in the most remote areas.

  • Konkani Phrases

- Hello/Good morning - Deu boro dis dium (Deo Boro dees dhee-oo)
- Good evening - Deu bori sanz dium (Dhee-oh bori sanj dhee-oo)

Divar Island experiences a tropical climate and becomes a year-round destination. Summers are humid. The monsoon season brings refreshing rain, while winters are pleasant. We advise you to pack light, breathable clothing and a hat for sun protection year-round.

Discovery Checklist

The nature theme alone does not make the Divar Islands unique from other tourist places. The true beauty of these parts of lands away from the main Goan land lies in what you can do while you are here. It includes:

- Cycle through scenic lands
- Explore the historical sites
- Enjoy birdwatching
- Taste Goan cuisine

While the must-visit places nearby are:

- Old Goa (4 km away)
- Panaji or Panjim (10km away)

Oh! On your way home, do not forget to buy some popular Goan cashew nuts, traditional handicrafts like pottery, or a bottle of Fenny (the Goan traditional cashew liquor).

A Guide to WH Questions

Transportation

The only way to access the island is by ferry.

Short and scenic ferry rides operate from Old Goa Jetty (closest to Panjim) and Ribandar Jetty (on the opposite side of the Mandovi River). Ferries run often throughout the day, from 6:00 AM to 2:00 AM, making day trips or overnight stays doable. The best part? Ferries are free for passengers and even two-wheelers, making it a budget-friendly option.

Hotels

Goa is one of the affordable states in India with reasonable prices other than in specific locations where tourists come in groups. Many reasonable stay options and hotels are available within Divar Island. Some of our suggestions are:

  • Accommodation

- Island House Goa - It's a 3-star hotel.
- Moradia dos Quadros H O M E - It's a 4.9-star rating hotel.

  • Hotels

- Avinash Bar and Restaurant - Best for pan Indian food.
- PhilCollins Family Restaurant and Bar - Best for nonveg items.
- ROCK INN Restaurant & Bar - Best for pan Indian food and beverages.

- Seafood Curry with Rice: Fish cooked in coconut-based curry eaten with rice.
- Bebinca: A layered cake made with coconut milk and semolina.
- Xacuti: A spicy curry is often made with chicken or lamb.

Travel Tips

- Wear sturdy footwear, as Divar Island is best explored on foot.
- Card payment may not be available everywhere. So, carry some cash.
- Wear light clothing and a hat for the warm and humid climate of Goa.

Safety Tips

- Stay informed about weather conditions and heed warnings.
- Be mindful of mosquitos, especially during the monsoon season.
- Don't roam out at night, as street lighting might be limited in some areas.

Travel Expenses

Divar Island is the best option for budget-conscious travellers. Since Divar Island is away from the actual tourist sites, the prices on every item are reasonable, from stay to dining. On average, you might need ₹2,000 to ₹3,000 a day per person.

Conclusion

Relax on Divar Island is a picturesque escape in Goa! Far from the busy beaches and bustling streets you have known, Divar offers the peace you just need to free your mind from the chaos around you. Rent a bicycle and ride through green fields and quaint Goan villages, taking a peak into the actual country life.
